Understanding Hip Pain

Hip pain can interfere with everything from walking and sleeping to simply sitting comfortably. Because the hip is a complex joint, pain can stem from the bursae, cartilage, tendons, muscles, or nearby structures. Pinpointing the true source is the first step toward effective relief. At Beyond Stem Cells, our skilled physicians specialize in diagnosing and evaluating conditions associated with hip pain, delivering individualized and impactful hip pain therapy for the Denver area.

What Is Hip Bursitis?

Hip bursitis is irritation or inflammation of one or more bursae in the hip. Bursae are small, fluid-filled sacs that provide essential cushioning to the tendons, muscles, and bones near the joints, and help lower joint friction. When these sacs become inflamed, the result is pain and reduced mobility. The condition is most common in middle-aged and older adults.

Common Causes of Hip Bursitis

Several factors may contribute to hip bursitis, including:

  • Repeated stress on the hip
  • Hip injury
  • Gout
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Diabetes
  • Spinal problems such as scoliosis
  • Bone spurs on the hips
  • Uneven leg length

Symptoms to Watch For

Symptoms of hip bursitis include tenderness and pain in the hip joint. Early on, the pain is often sharp; over time it typically becomes achy and dull. Other symptoms may include swelling around the affected area. If left untreated, the bursae in some people may thicken, which worsens swelling, limits movement, and weakens surrounding muscles. The pain is often progressive, gradually transforming into a widespread ache.

Hip pain has a way of narrowing your life before you notice. Getting out of a low chair takes a moment longer. You stop crossing your legs. Sleeping on that side becomes uncomfortable, then impossible. Most people adjust around it for months before mentioning it to anyone.

There's no prize for waiting. Getting assessed early gives you more options, not fewer.

Stem Cell Therapy

Regenerative medicine uses growth factors and regenerative cells to support the repair of damaged tissue and reduce inflammation in and around the hip joint.

PRP / PRF Therapy

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) concentrate your body's own healing factors and deliver them to the affected area to encourage recovery.

Exosome Therapy

Exosomes are cellular messengers that signal surrounding tissue to repair and can help modulate inflammation—an advanced, non-surgical regenerative option.

Being honest about the evidence

No stem cell product is FDA-approved for hip osteoarthritis. Legitimate US clinics operate under the 361 HCT/P exemption, which permits use of your own tissue when it is minimally manipulated and used for a homologous purpose. That is the framework we work within.

The evidence base is still developing. Published studies are mostly small with relatively short follow-up. Major orthopaedic guideline bodies do not currently recommend regenerative injections as standard first-line care for hip osteoarthritis. PRP has a somewhat stronger evidence base than cell-based therapy, though results still vary.

What is well established: structured exercise, strengthening and physical therapy have the strongest evidence for symptomatic hip osteoarthritis. If you have not tried those, that is often the right first step — and we will tell you so.

We are not offering a cure. We are offering a non-surgical option that may reduce pain and improve function, with a realistic prospect of delaying more invasive intervention. Results vary between individuals. Some patients respond well; some do not.

Any clinic promising guaranteed results for hip osteoarthritis is overselling.

Who this is suitable for – and who it isn’t

Regenerative treatment may be appropriate when you have mild to moderate hip osteoarthritis, bursitis, tendinopathy, or a partial soft-tissue injury; when conservative treatment such as physical therapy has not given enough relief; when you want to avoid or delay surgery; and when you are in reasonable general health with realistic expectations.

It is often not the right choice when cartilage loss is advanced with bone-on-bone contact, where hip replacement may be more appropriate; when there is an active joint infection; when the hip is structurally unstable in a way that needs surgical repair; when you have not yet tried physical therapy; or when you are looking for a guaranteed outcome.

If you are not a good candidate, we will say so at consultation and explain why. We would rather turn down a treatment than perform one unlikely to help.

Hip Osteoarthritis or Hip Degeneration

Hip osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition that causes gradual joint damage. It is one of the most common types of arthritis caused due to the wear & tear and breakdown of the hip cartilage leading to inflammation and severe pain. Statistics show that the global hip osteoarthritis incidence increased by 115.4 percent between 1990 and 2019.

The condition may affect some people faster because of the irregular bone shape that forms the hip joint. For instance, if the sockets and the hip joint ball don’t fit together perfectly, it causes friction leading to osteoarthritis. Hip osteoarthritis may also occur in people with hip dysplasia (where the hip socket is too shallow and can’t support the femur ball). It puts abnormal stress on the hip cartilage, causing it to wear and tear prematurely.

Other factors contributing to hip osteoarthritis are:

  • Joint injury
  • Aging
  • Obesity/overweight
  • Engaging in activities that put extra stress on the hip joint

Hip osteoarthritis can be divided into four stages:

Stage 1– Small wear and tear in the hip joint followed by minor bone spurs

Stage 2: The breakdown of cartilage along with the growth of bone spurs visible in X-rays. Symptoms of include discomfort, stiffness, and mild pain.

Stage 3: At this stage, everyday activities like squatting and walking may cause pain and inflammation due to the erosion of the cartilage and the narrowing of the hip bone gap.

Stage 4: It is the severe stage where the cartilage is almost lost because of chronic inflammation. You may feel pain and stiffness all the time.

Hip Bursitis is irritation or inflammation of one or more bursae in the hip. Bursae are fluid-filled small sacs that provide essential cushioning to the tendons, muscles, and bones near the joints. They also help lower joint friction.

The condition is most common in middle-aged and older adults. Multiple factors may contribute to hip Bursitis, such as:

  • Gout
  • Hip injury
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Repeated stress on the hip
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Diabetes
  • Spinal problems like scoliosis
  • Bone spurs on the hips
  • Uneven length of the legs

Symptoms of hip bursitis include tenderness and pain in the hip joints. In the beginning, the pain is sharp. However, it becomes achy and dull later. Other symptoms may include swelling around the area affected. If left untreated, bursae in some people may thicken, which worsens the swelling and limits movement while weakening muscles. Furthermore, the pain is progressive, transforming into a widespread ache.

The pain may worsen with activity, mainly if it is triggered by arthritis. Here are the two most common causes of hip pain.

Regenerative Medicine for Hip Pain

Hip pain is a common problem that affects many people making it difficult to walk, stand and sit. Hip pain has many causes making essential to be evaluated properly to find the true cause. There are many conditions that can cause hip pain, including osteroarthritis, bursitis, tendonitis, and osteonecrosis.

At Beyond Stem Cells, we have extensive experience when it comes to hip pain treatment. We have pioneered the industry’s latest proven alternatives to surgery and steroids. Our in-office, same-day procedures will alleviate your hip pain regardless of the cause. Our revolutionary platelet rich plasma (PRP) and regenerative cell procedures treat all the damage and underlying conditions that cause you pain. Our medical professionals can help rebuild and strengthen the damaged tissue of your hip, eliminating your pain and improving your quality of life.

Labrum tear is caused in many different ways. Sports injuries are the main cause of labrum tears. The reason is, the outermost part of the labrum attaches directly to the tendon. So the athletes who use a lot of force and motion such as weightlifters, golfers and baseball pitchers are at high risk of this type of injury.

Traumatic injury is the most common cause of a tear. Traumatic injury may result from a situation such as falling in a manner that puts strain on the hip or a direct blow or sudden pull. Furthermore, labrum tear can result from degradation of the cartilage from overuse, repetitive motion and a dislocated hip.

If you are suffering from labrum tear, you can visit us for a painless alternative to cortisone injections and/or surgery.

PRP and Growth factor Therapy

Our therapy is one of the newest and most cutting-edge therapies for chronic joint pain. Amniotic derived regenerative cell therapy offers patients 3 essential properties for healing and restoring joint health:

➝ A high concentration of regenerative cells

➝ Hyaluronic Acid for joint lubrication and movement

➝ Anti-inflammatory cytokines and cellular growth factors essential for building new joint tissue

The therapy consists of an injection directly into the painful area. The therapy has the potential to actually alter the course of the condition and not simply mask the hip pain. This therapy has significant potential for those in hip pain, and could actually repair structural problems while treating pain and inflammation simultaneously.

Consultations are free. We assess the hip, tell you whether treatment is likely to help, and give you a written quote.
